Welcome to garron.us, the website of Lucas Garron.
Currently, there is not much posted, but as I add content, I'll list it below (eventually, I'll have a site index, too).

December 24, 2008I finally uploaded most of my songs into a songs database. Mu
May 28, 2008Small note: While the content may stil be useful, this site is woefully out of date (hey, I can average under my listed OH PB!). I'm hoping to improve it this summer. I've still been cubing, though I do most of it sneakretly by posting videos, contributing to the speedsolving.com forum, etc. G
May 28, 2008It seems the time has come for Frank Morris Facts. C
April 29, 2008I will be attending Stanford University in the fall of 2008.
Thanks to UC Davis, UCLA, and UC Berkeley for also admitting me.
G
November 11, 2007You know you've been cubing too long when... C
July 15, 2007I'm going to SUMaC.
Not sure how that will influence this website...
M
July 11, 2007Added a counter to my site (again, got the idea from Macky's page). Counting starts today (June 11, 2007). G
July 4, 2007Since I live in America, I suppose I should be patriotic... Well, I'll use this opportunity to show off my cool Cube Flag! (Huge - 6000x4500)
Here's an animation.
This is based on (actually, taken from) my animated US Open logo. Made with POV-Ray, of course. (Source code will be up in a few years. :-)
C P
June 26, 2007A lot of updates are missing here...
Anyhow, I created a synchronized "Waltzing Cube" animation.
I also implemented an alg display feature (actually, two) as a Firefox search engine.
C P
June 15, 2007The end of school was disastrous and unreasonable, but it kept me busy. And today in the morning I should have left for the US Open and the Origami USA convention :-(
Anyhow, I finished the MGLS pages today -my publication of a last-slot variation that Macky invented and I developed into a fully usable method (it's now my speedcubing method).
C
April 1, 2007Here are optimal solutions to all the PLLs. Note the surprising 9-move HTM solution to the Y. (April Fools'! It's 13 moves.) C
March 29, 2007I made a few fake cubing videos last weekend. Here they are. C
March 28, 2007No update to this page in over two months! I've been setting more records, though: I'm finally sub-20 (on a good average).
I worked on a speed BLD guide for two weeks (it's finally up!), after working to get the record.
C
February 25, 2007The results of the Belgian Open are posted. I've never been so amazed...
And I wanted to get the third official sub-2 BLD! Oh well; hats (center caps?) off to Mátyás!
And congratulations to Vandenbergh (no offense meant to Fung)!
Wow...
C
February 18, 2007I know I haven't updated much, but I've had a lot to do (and still do). I've also set lots of records: 3x3x3: 15.49, 3x3x3 Average: 20.74, Computer 3x3x3 Average: 21.83 (almost 20.75), 3x3x3 OH: 30.30, 3x3x3 OH average: 46.23, 3x3x3 BLD: 1:40.95, 3x3x3 BLD average: 4:11, 42 cube marathon: <21 minutes, 2x2x2 BLD 27 seconds, and speed BLD: 19.69 seconds. C
January 13, 2007Caltech Winter was great :-) I got a few sub-20's :-), but DNF'ed all BLD's ;-( 4x4x4 and Magic were cancelled :-(
My dad caught Dan Dzoan's world record one-handed solve on video:
Low Quality (pretty good)
Medium Quality
The high quality video is at a corresponding URL; it's 70 MB, so only download if you really want it.
My 18.18
My one-handed 39.69
C
January 12, 2007I got this idea from GEB. Find your initials in the animation. P
January 1, 2007This year, I am introducing the Alg of the Week. The first alg is cube-in-cube-in-cube. C P
December 31, 200660-second version. P
December 31, 2006Happy New Year!
The POV-Ray source code; directions for custom render:
Boot POV-Ray; render 345 frames at good resolution. Align music beat every second (starting 0.5 seconds). Concatenate and merge at 30 FPS; enjoy any time.
P
December 31, 2006I got a sub-2 BLD yesterday! 1:58.59
My blindfolded pages are growing. I added corner and edge permutation algs, and did a Mathematica simulation of the probabilities.
C
December 29, 2006I tried a few team blindfolded solves with Arthur. The music line-up at the end is accidental! C
December 29, 2006There is a link on speedcubing.com. Observe the worst journalism ever:
"He can solve a cube blindfolded in 20 minutes.
That means memorizing every square on all six sides, the equivalent of six nine-digit numbers, and manipulating them in his mind while going through a series of algorithms like this one: F R U R' U' F'."

What?
That wouldn't even be useful if it made sense or if anybody's tried it (I'd rather try my regular method blindfolded). At least the alg is useful, during regular solves.
By the way, I got a 2:00.06 blindfolded solve; I didn't quite finish twisting my single last setup move, though (could this count as a +2 in competition?)...
C
December 28, 2006Heise implemented permalinks: 17.63 (-: C
December 24, 2006Merry Christmas!G P
[December 24, 2006]Did I ever mention my two entries into the POV-Ray Short Code Contest 4? Guess which two are mine.P C
December 24, 2006Not long, apparently. I set a new record average of 22.46 during the Sunday Contest. C
December 23, 2006Craig Bouchard beat my 2:49.83 with a 2:49.73. So, I got myself a 2:35.79. Let's see how long that one lasts... C
December 22, 2006Today I did a few blindfolded solves, on Ryan Heise's simulator. Let's see how long that 2:49.83 stays at spot #1...
Now, I'd better get back to RefCon...
C
December 21, 2006I've been busy again. I set new Magic (1.29, 1.26, and 1.26 again), 2x2x2 BLD, and 3x3x3 BLD (2:25) records, all on video. They'll all be online eventually...
I wrote up a few pages explaining my corner orientation system for blindfolded solves. I also calculated the probabilities of cubies being in their place or oriented, in a random scramble; the results are on this page.
C
December 19, 2006I set a new 3x3x3 blindfolded record. (The background sound is from a Star Wars podracing computer game.) C
December 18, 2006I filmed A Heise simulator solve. Sub-20, too. C
December 9, 2006The Rubik's cube animation system is now capable of parsing an algorithm as a string in the familiar URFLBD format (with 2, ', 2'[='2] suffixes). I could add slice turns and double-layer twists, if requested... C P
November 26, 2006I finally cleaned up POV-Ray my Rubik's cube animation system; it's not efficient, but it's a start... The file as is rendered at high resolution should give a nice image. Use +kff200 for a joined T and J PLL animation.
You can get POV-Ray here. It's a great program (although raytracing animation is far from real-time, so I'm going to try to port the code to OpenGL).
C P
November 24, 2006I set a new 23.03 record average for the Sunday Contest! :-) (-: C A
November 24, 2006How about speedcranefolding (video: 8.14 seconds)? How about starting with the entire square (~1 minute)? O A
November 24, 2006I've reconstructed a few normal solves: F2L using slots, Keyhole/Working Corner #1, Keyhole/Working Corner #2. For those who like turbo blindfolded simulations: the 3:22, with fast moves. C A
November 23, 2006I now have a complete video index page. It contains my videos from the Berkeley competition. I set my official record in every event (both average and single-except in Magic, where I tied my old 1.71 record), and won first place in Magic. I have also reconstructed my 3:22 blindfolded solve. C A
November 18, 2006Off to the Berkeley competition! Carpe cubum! C
November 16, 2006I solved four 3x3x3 cubes blindfolded simultaneously! Videos: Everything The solving portion The files are large, so please download the files for viewing; streaming doesn't work anyhow.... C
November 15, 2006A 2:29.56 blindfolded solve. I love it (except I almost didn't turn the final L' far enough...); it was even an annoying edge permutation. And a 5x5x5 PR on video. Also, Master Magic solves of 2.94 and 2.90 from last weekend; my Master Magic broke since then...
Good practice for the Berkeley competition (note the shirt on my Master Magic solves).

Euler is the featured article on Wikipedia today! - Not anymore :-(

Now it's San Francisco.

November ?, 2006The Magic page now also has a Master Magic stringing diagram. C
November 7, 2006Michael Fung gave me permission to render his Square-1 shape algorithms for getting into cube shape. I'll have to figure out a way to put up the animations, but for now, a PDF. I'll investigate the case of several missing images. C P
November 2, 2006a2. My loudest song yet; took two years to finish, but now I'm reasonably satisfied with the two minutes to go with the theme. Mu

A Twisty Pumpkin. C A
October 22, 2006The Magic page now has very detailed instructions for assembly. I didn't yet get to putting up orientations for the Master and Super Magics.
I'm crazy. Proof: I tried 4x4x4 BLD; it took 90 min, and I was two cycles off. Friday, I set a 3x3x3 record average (10 of 12) of 23.46 during a 26.02 average of 100, both containing a 16.75 LL skip
I've been filming my cubing recently; this weekend I did 3x3x3 (19.81), 3x3x3 BLD (3:32.27 PR), the barrel cube, 3x3x3 supercube, 4x4x4 (messed up a record), 5x5x5, a few good Square-1 solves, a few Square-1 solves starting square, Rubik's World, Master Magic (the only Magic working, barely; I got a 3.10 from it), a 4x4x4 BLD DNF (still hurts), and a speed blindfolded solve with memorization of God's algorithm (12 seconds).

September 18, 2006Have you seen my speculation of the opening to the next Harry Potter movie? It's an old render; I had to compress it from a hundred MB's. That blotch at the end should be a broomstick. A P
September 11, 2006I'm back from 4OSME. Due to the apparent popularity of the base, I am posting a one-page diagramming of my Six-Sided Square (a natural generalization of the Preliminary Fold and John Montroll's Five-Sided Square). Try folding a crane or flower from it; the extra flaps can be used in many ways.
The Eight-Sided Square is not yet diagrammed, but it is folded similarly from a blintzed bird base. These two are part of a small upcoming paper.
O
September 2, 2006The Square-1 algorithm page now contains a thumbnail of each case, and the zip contains embedded HTML files for each step. They're going to stay final for a while. C P
September 2, 2006The Northgate Fight Song (also in C) and trumpet .ogg (again, there's also an NHS.mp3). Mu Sc
September 1, 2006The algorithms are rendered. You can get everything as one large zip file. C P
August 31, 2006I posted all the layer-solving MP4's. The others are a matter of more automation; expect them Friday. I'm trying to fit everything into one gigantic batch calling lots of files.
Corners into layer: 1 2 3 4 5
Edges into layer: 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Corner permutation (only one for now): 1 Test the embedded version.

August 27, 2006Lars Vandenbergh gave me permission to render all of his algorithms. Here is a preview of what each video will look like. C P
August 27, 2006All the thrill of Square-1 animation, now brought to you in LG3D!
3D glasses may be necessary to view Motion-Picture-Experts-Group-4 encoded moving picture. Video compressed into low quality to greedily save on file size. Lucas Garron is not responsible for anything that may occur due to the downloading, viewing, diplaying, enjoyment, watching, editing, resizing, reencoding, or encrypting of this video. Void where prohibited.
C P
August 27, 2006Updated the records page. And uploaded a Square-1 animation of my other blindfolded alg. C P
August 27, 2006I present the first-ever raytraced -perhaps even the first truly rendered- animation of a Square-1, the two-edge parity. More algorithms, and POV-Ray source code, will follow. C P
August 26, 2006I still haven't posted any pieces other than 005, so as a beginning I uploaded an OGG of 017. I like how the ending turned out.
For those of you who do not yet enjoy the wonders of open source as much as I do: look for the file with a .mp3 extension.
Mu
August 22, 2006cube.garron.us finally has an index page.
By the way, I solved a Square-1 blindfolded yesterday; I get to be at the top of speedcubing.com (notice their news coloring scheme; it gave me the idea for this page).
Oh, and if anybody knows a bit about graph theory, I would love to know to find the smallest set of Square-1 shapes such that a member can be reached in one twist from any position (you can find my email somewhere on the Unofficial World Records pages).
C
August 18, 2006I created an animation of the 4OSME logo. O
August 16, 2006Created a history for my 3x3x3 methods. I also started my algorithm page. C
August 15, 2006I created new Super Magic pattern with world views from space. It looks nice: Front Back. C
August 12, 2006Puzzle videos now have their own page. C
August 4-6, 2006I went to the Nationals at the Exploratorium (results). I met Craig Brouchard, Bob Burton, Frank Morris, Chris Hardwick, Adam Zamora, and more...
